Boudoir photography is still not widely understood and is easily confused with glamour photography, a simple lingerie shoot or explicit imagery. It is sometimes dismissed as vulgar or undignified. Authentic boudoir, however, belongs to the art of portraiture: it uses the body, light, atmosphere and gesture to portray femininity in a personal, elegant and self-aware way.
Precisely because it is intimate, owning a camera or following a recent trend is not enough. What does “boudoir” mean?
Boudoir photography takes its name from the French word “boudoir”, originally used for a lady’s private room: an intimate, elegant and secluded space, usually near the bedroom, where she could withdraw, take care of herself or receive close visitors.
The word comes from the French verb bouder, meaning “to sulk”. With a slightly playful nuance, the boudoir was therefore a room in which to retreat. The modern meaning of boudoir photography grew from this idea of intimacy, privacy and personal freedom.
What is boudoir photography?
In boudoir photography, the female body and sensuality are transformed into art. Light caresses the body, enhances the delicacy of the features and shapes the figure through chiaroscuro, shadows and detail.
These are soft, refined images—never vulgar or provocative—in which sensuality is whispered rather than overexposed. Suggestive photographs, delicate chiaroscuro, soft light and carefully measured shadows are used to suggest, rather than reveal everything.
Boudoir photography belongs to the portrait genre. It portrays a woman in her most authentic identity, through her thoughts, emotions, desires and relationship with herself. Boudoir celebrates femininity by elevating the female body into something expressive and poetic.

The history of boudoir photography
Boudoir photography has its roots in an old French tradition associated with intimacy, privacy and the portrayal of femininity.
In the eighteenth century, the word “boudoir” described a small, elegant and secluded private room where a woman could withdraw, care for herself or receive close visitors.
During the nineteenth century, as photography developed, female portraiture became increasingly personal and theatrical. Félix Nadar’s celebrated portraits of Sarah Bernhardt, created around 1864, belong to the historical progression that made photographs of women more intimate and evocative.
Throughout the twentieth century, the genre absorbed influences from painting, cinema, fashion and glamour photography, gradually developing into contemporary boudoir: an intimate, sensual and personal portrait in which the body is not merely displayed, but interpreted through light, posing, atmosphere and personality.
Today, boudoir photography has a powerful empowering value and can become a journey of self-esteem and freedom, allowing a woman to present herself with elegance and awareness in an intimate, artistic setting. It does not necessarily require lingerie or nudity: it portrays femininity in a private, personal way that is never imposed.
SENSUALITY, BOUNDARIES AND PREJUDICES
Boudoir is not vulgar and does not require nudity
Is boudoir photography vulgar or pornographic?
No. Pornography is intended to display the body for direct sexual arousal. Boudoir photography focuses instead on portraiture, atmosphere, personality and suggested sensuality.
An image can be intense without being explicit. A bare shoulder, a glance, a back, a hand or a shadow can reveal far more than exposed nudity. The dignity of an image depends on the gaze with which it is created, not on the amount of visible skin.
Do I have to pose in lingerie?
No. Boudoir is not the same as a lingerie shoot. You may wear lingerie, but you may also choose a shirt, bodysuit, dress, oversized jumper, jacket, slip, fabric, blanket or an item of clothing belonging to someone you love.
A woman’s sensuality is not measured in inches of exposed skin. It comes from gesture, expression, posture, light and the way she feels in what she is wearing.
Do I have to be completely nude?
Absolutely not. You can complete the entire photoshoot without ever being nude. You decide the level of intimacy before and during the session. No photograph should ever go beyond what feels appropriate to your personality and to the reason you chose boudoir.
Who decides how much I reveal?
You do. Before the photoshoot, we discuss what you would like to create and where your boundaries lie. During the session, you may confirm, reduce or change what you had imagined. No creative idea ever takes priority over your wellbeing.
Can I change my mind during the photoshoot?
Yes. You may change an outfit, avoid a particular image, cover up more or stop a sequence. Consent is not a decision made once and for all: it must remain present throughout the entire experience.
Can I refuse a pose?
Yes. Posing guidance is there to flatter you and remove the pressure of having to know what to do; it is not an imposition. If a position does not appeal to you, does not represent you or makes you uncomfortable, it is simply replaced.
What is the difference between boudoir, glamour, fine-art nude photography and a lingerie shoot?
Boudoir is intimate, narrative and personal. Sensuality may be subtle, playful, romantic or more intense, but it remains connected to portraiture and to the woman’s identity.
Glamour photography is generally more direct, seductive and constructed. Eye contact with the camera, clothing, make-up and posing often play a more overt role.
Fine-art nude photography uses the body as shape, line, volume and visual material. Nudity may be complete, but it is interpreted through light, composition and aesthetic research.
A lingerie shoot is intended to portray the body, its shape and what is being worn, without necessarily revealing the woman behind the images.
These areas can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A photographer’s experience also lies in understanding which visual language genuinely represents the person.

I do not have a perfect body. Can I still pose for boudoir?

These images reveal the femininity each woman carries within herself, the uniqueness of her body, her personal beauty and the unrepeatable combination of details that makes it beautiful in a way no other body can be.

The women portrayed in boudoir are real women of every age and body type: tall, short, slim, curvy, young or mature. Appropriate make-up, the right light, posing and camera angles can flatter every body without turning it into something it is not.

Is a boudoir photoshoot suitable for every age?
Yes. There is no correct age at which to feel feminine, desirable or worthy of being portrayed. Every session is designed around the individual: light, styling, posing and atmosphere must respect her age, her character and what she wishes to express.
Is it suitable after pregnancy, a physical change or as I grow older?
Yes. Many women choose boudoir precisely when their body has changed and they feel the need to recognise it as their own again. It is not about erasing the marks of life, but finding a different way to see them and place them within an image in which you feel truly represented.
Can I do it even if I am very shy?
Yes. Boudoir is for every woman, including those who are very shy or reserved, who do not believe they can be sensual or who see themselves as awkward and inadequate. Most clients are not used to posing and arrive feeling embarrassed, apprehensive or uncertain. The consultation, the time dedicated to make-up and the gradual beginning of the photoshoot are specifically designed to build confidence before moving towards more intimate images.
Is it suitable if I do not feel photogenic?
Yes. Being photogenic is not a fixed quality that some people possess and others do not. It depends on light, lens choice, angle, expression, posture, direction and the photographer’s ability to identify a person’s strengths. You do not need to know how to look good in photographs: recognising and enhancing those strengths is part of our work.

After booking, we will arrange a consultation, preferably at the studio, or by telephone or video call. We will discuss what you would like to create and define the atmosphere, clothing, level of intimacy and desired result together. It is also an opportunity to understand instinctively whether you can trust us and whether we are able to make you feel comfortable.

We believe that what happens during a photographic session is a little like what happens when a patient enters a psychologist’s office: they tell their story. Would I feel more comfortable with a female photographer?
It is an understandable and very common question, especially when considering such an intimate service for the first time.
Professionalism, however, does not depend on the photographer’s sex. It depends on experience, sensitivity, respect, the ability to listen and the quality of the work. Being a woman does not automatically make a photographer more competent in boudoir, just as being a man does not make a photographer less delicate or less able to understand the person in front of him.
It is natural to think that sharing such an intimate moment with a woman might make it easier to relax and feel less embarrassed. The gaze of a man—initially a stranger—may instead seem intimidating or create the fear of not being able to express yourself freely.
In this regard, a famous quotation attributed to Marilyn Monroe humorously illustrates how men and women can observe the same situation from very different perspectives:

Photographer Giuliano Froio’s code of ethics is his calling card, just like his portfolio. Whenever we create a boudoir photoshoot, we remain fully aware of the personal and emotional significance this experience may have for the woman who chooses to place her trust in the Studio.
Our role is not simply to create beautiful photographs. Above all, it means protecting the trust we are given, respecting every agreed boundary and working with seriousness, discretion and sensitivity.
No pose is imposed. The level of intimacy is agreed together and can be changed at any time. The photographs remain private and are never published unless the client spontaneously offers and explicitly authorises their use. No photographic or commercial requirement ever takes precedence over her peace of mind.

What happens during a boudoir photoshoot?
How does the experience work?
Every woman is different, and every photographic session should be different too. The boudoir experience is tailored to you, to what you wish to create and, above all, to what makes you feel comfortable.
Before the photoshoot, we hold a consultation to define the atmosphere, outfits, references, level of intimacy and desired result. On the agreed day, the make-up artist will take care of you with professional make-up designed for your face, the lighting and the chosen clothing.
Once you are ready, the photographic session begins. We do not expect rehearsed expressions or poses: photographer Giuliano Froio will guide you step by step, while leaving room for your personality and for the most natural and spontaneous moments.
Relax. Be yourself. Believe in it. Dare. Have fun.
During the photoshoot, you may take breaks, change outfits, talk and listen to your favourite music. The session is not a test to pass, but an experience to enjoy.
How long does a boudoir session last?
The complete experience lasts approximately 3 hours, including make-up. This allows time to prepare without rushing, begin gradually, make the agreed outfit changes and take breaks whenever needed.
Does the make-up artist remain throughout the session?
Yes. The make-up artist is present for the full duration of the experience, checks and refreshes the make-up whenever necessary and can adapt it to different outfits. She can also create simple hairstyles and adjust the hair during the photoshoot.
Where does the boudoir photoshoot take place?
Our main location is a private home studio in Rome’s EUR district: a fully equipped photographic space within a warm, discreet domestic setting, with dedicated sets and private areas where you can change and prepare.
The experience may also be arranged in a suite, hotel, private residence or another location selected together.
Feasibility is assessed according to the available space, light, privacy and the type of images you would like to create.
Any rental, authorisation, equipment transport and travel costs are quoted separately.
Can someone accompany me during the session?
Yes, provided that their presence helps you feel more comfortable. We recommend bringing only one person: someone emotionally close, discreet and able to observe without offering advice or comments that might create self-consciousness or embarrassment.
Before deciding, it is worth considering whether that person’s presence will genuinely allow you to express yourself more freely. In some cases, a companion is reassuring; in others, it can make it harder to let go.

How to prepare for a boudoir photoshoot
How should I prepare for the photoshoot?
In the days beforehand, give yourself enough time to arrive rested and unhurried. You may choose to book a manicure, beauty treatment or simply a quieter day: none of these is compulsory, but each can become an opportunity to take care of yourself.
Look at photographs, films, paintings, clothing and atmospheres that inspire you. You can also browse our Instagram profile, which is updated more frequently than the website and includes recent images, moods and projects. The purpose is not to copy, but to understand what feels sensual, elegant or representative to you. During the consultation, we can turn these references into a project that feels genuinely yours.
In the hours immediately before the session, avoid very tight clothing, elastic bands or accessories that may leave visible marks on the skin. Bring outfits that are clean, complete and preferably tried on in advance.
Finally, dare. Give yourself an item you have always dreamed of wearing—something reserved for a truly special occasion, something that enhances your femininity. Wear your favourite piece of jewellery and buy the flowers you love most.
What should I wear?
The decision is yours. You do not need particularly provocative lingerie, high heels or clothes that do not feel like you.
You may be barefoot, wrapped in an oversized jumper or a blanket, wearing a shirt, jacket, bodysuit or dress. You may choose something romantic, minimal, elegant, playful or completely different from conventional boudoir stereotypes.
What matters is feeling comfortable and expressing your personality. If you wish, we can plan several outfit changes and create different atmospheres within the same session.
Which jewellery and accessories can I bring?
You may bring jewellery with personal meaning, gloves, stockings, veils, shoes, a shirt, perfume, a book, flowers or another meaningful object. A few carefully chosen elements work better than many unrelated accessories.
Avoid damaged costume jewellery, highly reflective items or accessories that dominate the image without adding meaning. During the consultation, we will decide what can genuinely enhance the project.
Are make-up and hairstyling included?
The service includes a make-up artist who creates a personalised look based on your features, colouring, style and chosen outfits.
The make-up is designed specifically for photography and is checked and refreshed throughout the session. Simple hairstyling and hair adjustments—such as waves, straight hair or an understated updo—are also included. More complex hairstyles may require a separate service to be arranged in advance.
What should I avoid?
- Outfits you have never tried on or that need constant adjustment.
- Artificial tanning or aggressive beauty treatments immediately before the photoshoot.
- Tight elastic bands around wrists, ankles, waist or legs during the hours beforehand.
- Accessories chosen simply because they seem “sexy” but do not reflect your personality.
- Rigid comparisons with images of models or bodies completely different from your own.
ART DIRECTION AND POSING
How to pose for a boudoir photoshoot
Do I need to know how to pose?
We do not expect you to pose like a professional model: that is not your job. Photographer Giuliano Froio’s role is to understand and develop the poses best suited to highlighting your strengths.
During the session, we will build the most flattering positions together. Giuliano will guide you step by step, paying attention to your expression, hands, breathing, posture, hair movement and every detail that can change the final result.
Posing is not intended to make you look artificial. It transforms tension, habits and unplanned gestures into harmonious, natural lines in front of the camera.
You will not need to worry about anything. It is our responsibility to make you feel comfortable, help you relax and gradually release every tension.
Four suggestions for enjoying the session
- Honour yourself. You do not need to be like anyone else. Do not wear clothing that does not represent you and do not play a role that does not belong to you.
- Trust yourself. You can be the sensual, feminine woman you know you can be, even if you have hidden her behind insecurity and fear until now.
- Let go. This is your moment. Relax, listen to the music, follow the guidance and give yourself time to enter the experience.
- Have fun. Remember that a boudoir session is a gift to yourself, a reward and a celebration of being a woman and of your femininity. Do not constantly think about how to look good in photographs: that is our responsibility. Smiling and enjoying yourself release tension from the face, neck and shoulders and make movement more natural.
PRIVACY, CONSENT AND PUBLICATION
How is the privacy of boudoir photographs protected?
Will the photographs be published?
No, never. Clients’ photographs are personal and sensitive and are never used or published without explicit authorisation. As a matter of professional ethics, our portfolio displays only a limited selection of images created with professional models.
Is separate authorisation required before photographs can be published?
Yes. The Studio never makes publication a condition of the service. Images may only be used if the client herself offers to authorise their use and signs a separate, specific and fully informed consent form clearly defining what is permitted.
Is the online proof gallery protected?
Yes. The selection is presented through a private, password-protected online gallery. Access details are communicated directly to the client and the gallery is not a public publication.
Can I create sensual images without showing my face?
Yes. We can work with details, hands, back, profile, silhouette, hair, fabrics and framing that does not make the face recognisable. This may be an aesthetic choice, not only a privacy requirement. It is also an interesting way to create fine-art images that can be printed and used to decorate your home in a personal and unique way.
Can the photographs be completely anonymous?
Yes, within the agreed limits. We can avoid the face, tattoos, recognisable jewellery and other identifying details. It is important to discuss this before the photoshoot so that the entire project can be designed around this requirement.
Where are the images stored while the work is being completed?
All images from the session are stored exclusively within the Studio’s private, protected archives. They are not uploaded to public spaces or shared with anyone outside the production process.
Who carries out the post-production?
Selection and post-production are performed exclusively by the photographer, without the involvement of external retouching services. The images do not circulate and remain under the Studio’s direct control throughout the entire process, from capture to delivery.
What happens to the archive after three months?
Three months after the session, the complete archive is automatically and irreversibly deleted from the Studio’s systems. It is therefore important to store the delivered files carefully: once the archive has been deleted, the photographs will remain exclusively with the client.
SELECTION, RETOUCHING AND DELIVERY
Post-production of boudoir photographs
How do I choose the photographs?
Numerous images are created during the photoshoot. Photographer Giuliano Froio personally carries out the initial technical selection and prepares a proof gallery that you can view through a private, password-protected online area.
You will also receive a separate PDF containing the images Giuliano considers most successful according to his artistic vision. This selection does not restrict your final choice; it is simply a recommendation that may help if you are uncertain between several photographs.
How many photographs are included?
The service includes one of the following two options:
- 10 images with professional natural post-production, or
- 5 images with advanced retouching and agreed adjustments to the face and body.

Natural post-production: the essential foundation
This is included in every boudoir photoshoot. It covers file development, colour balance, exposure and contrast adjustments, reframing when necessary, the removal of distracting elements and a treatment consistent with the photographer’s visual style.
It also includes subtle skin enhancement and the natural reduction of minor blemishes, without changing facial features or altering the person’s physiognomy.
The aim is to create a polished, complete image while preserving an authentic and credible result, without erasing the person or turning her into an artificial face.
Advanced retouching: what can it include?
Advanced retouching adds targeted refinements such as skin smoothing for a polished yet natural effect, lighting optimisation to draw attention to key elements and delicate changes to the face and body.
It may include, for example, teeth whitening, greater definition around the eyes, body reshaping and tattoo removal. Every intervention is agreed with the client.
The principle is to achieve an elegant, credible result that never looks excessively artificial. Retouching should enhance the image, not replace the person.
How long is the digital archive retained?
The digital archive is stored on private, protected servers for 3 months from the date of the service. After this period, it is deleted automatically and irreversibly. It is therefore important to download and store the delivered files correctly: once the three months have passed, the photographs from the session will remain exclusively with the client.
Are printed products available?
Yes. At the end of the photoshoot, you can view a selection of luxury handcrafted print products that are not available to the general public and have been chosen specifically to enhance this type of imagery.
The most suitable products also depend on the photographs actually created and selected. For this reason, it would make little sense to sell them before the session: they are presented and considered only after the images have been viewed and the photographs best suited to a print, album or handcrafted product have been identified.

The cost depends on the chosen option, the type of post-production, the number of photographs, the location and any handcrafted print products selected after the photoshoot.
Before payment, you will receive a clear summary of the selected service and the final total, including all applicable taxes and charges, in accordance with the Terms and Conditions.
How far in advance should I book?
Every experience is prepared in detail and the Studio schedules no more than four boudoir sessions per month. We therefore recommend contacting us well in advance, especially if you have a specific date, anniversary or wedding in mind, or wish to give the images as a gift.
How can I book?
You can use the form on the boudoir photoshoot page or contact the Studio by telephone.
During the first contact, we will define the type of service you are interested in, check availability and agree the photoshoot date. You will then receive a complete summary of the chosen service, the final price including applicable taxes and charges, and the payment options.
To confirm the booking, a 50% deposit is required or, if preferred, the full amount may be paid in advance.
Once the date has been confirmed, we will arrange the consultation, which is part of the service and may take place at the studio, by telephone or by video call. If only the deposit has been paid, the remaining balance is due on the day of the photoshoot.
Can a boudoir photoshoot be given as a gift?
Yes. It may be given to a partner, wife or another loved one, but it is important to remember that this is a deeply personal experience. The voucher allows the recipient to choose the style, clothing and level of intimacy for herself.
